Informal Information:

In 1970, Japan hosted the World Expo in Osaka, it was a hugely important national event, and presented Japans post-war outlook to the world. 70 million visitors attended, and everyone in the  West in the 70's and 80's began to notice the impact of a modern Japan. With the theme of "Progress and Harmony for Mankind", Bonsai certainly inspires those motives, and how cool that the Yamaaki Kiln, in the golden period for bonsai made pots with these excellent commemorative seals?

On to the pot! Artisan made, moulded, hand finished, in a sprayed silver grey slip (Very similar to a Koyo grey slip). There is a bit of a wobble which is down to the firing. On the plus side, it has  been used, appreciated and acquired a nice patina over the intervening 54 years. A previous owner has marked it with the kanji for 'top'. perhaps it was a favourite.

Next year, Japan again hosts the World Expo, 55 years after the previous one. Yamaaki won't be producing a commemorative chop, but maybe someone else will?

Condition: Used, 3mm wobble, otherwise excellent, the pot is shown with a light application of oil.

YamaakiThe kiln was started by Katakoka Akitsuga and fired by three generations of potters, until it finally went 'cold' in 2011. It was the most productive bonsai pot kiln in Tokoname, fired with gas which gives those fantastic clay colours mimicking the pots of ancient China.
