Formal description:

Japanese bonsai pot from the Yamaaki kiln, Nanban, slight external rim, slip and glaze spash decoration, seal of Yamaaki kiln and nail signature of Koshosen.

External dimensions:
345 x 60mm (13½ x 2⅜ in)

Internal dimensions:
310 x 45mm (12¼ x 2⅛ in)

Informal information:

A typical nanban from Yamaaki, the style is the same as his fathers, featuring fabric pattern imprints, slip / wash applied over and splashes of red glaze on edge. The base is  bellied inwards to aid drainage, with a wood pattern imprint. In a Koshosen twist, the wire holes have been patterned with a round piece of wood with prominent grain. The seal and signature are 'Koshosen'.

Practical Notes: These nanban are designed to support a tall Bunjin or Literati tree, this one would work for a tree 3-4ft tall. This example is deeper than the usual Yamaaki nanbans, and traditionally the soil is mounded up high, so a good depth is possible. Finally, the pot is quite light, and with a tall tree, the pot needs to be secured to it's support or disaster will ensue with even a light breeze, bungee cord over the top or a hidden hook system will work.

Condition: used, excellent.

Koshosen, real name Sadamitsu Kataoka, also took the name Matsuizumi after his father passed away. The Yamaaki kiln was the most productive bonsai pot factory in Tokoname, thanks to Shosen Seniors modernisation. They fired a large gas kiln, producing very popular pots that captured the spirit of ancient Chinese pots. Only pots with nail signatures were handmade.
