Informal information:

Mame / small Shohin Wajaku rectangle in pear skin clay. An exceptionally well detailed carved pot from Wajaku.

Pear skin clay is always interesting, in part because each artist has their own method of making and using it. In Chinese wares, "pear skin" means introducing pre-fired clay with the wet clay. This gives firing stability (like grog) and a pear skin textured surface.

In many Japanese works, pear skin can mean that, but also, as in this case, I believe the artist introduces small pieces of dried (not fired) clay, then allows moisture levels to homogenize and then finishes the pot. It would be impossible to carve and finish a pot of this scale and detail with fired clay lumps in it.

Regardless of technical method, this Wajaku is a small masterpiece, and the pear skin creates a wonderful abstract scenery.

Condition: Used, excellent.

Ichihashi Wajaku - Born 1933, died 2001. Started pottery in 1964, studying under Mori Nenio; in 1974 he studied under Hayashi Tojaku and started making small bowls. He used Nabari clay from the Mie prefecture, and carved pots from a block, works were fired in gas reduction. Sometimes called the Ryuen of the East, once he learnt the basic skills he progressed quickly, and won numerous awards at the Keisei National Small Bowl Exhibition. An artist admired for his skill and much sought after. His works are rarer than say Ryuens, and have appreciated considerably in recent years.
