Formal description:
Japanese bonsai pot by Izumi-Ya / Zenigo of Tokoname. Oval with external rim, upper detail line and lower band, seal of Izumi-Ya / Zenigo underneath.
External dimensions:
320 250 x 120mm (12⅝ x 9⅞ x 4¾ in)
Internal dimensions:
270 x 209 x 100mm (10⅝ x 8¼ x 4 in)
Informal information:
A tall oval for a semi-cascade with details that break up the height and add interest. I've seen these motifs before on rectangular pots, this is the first time on an oval. Nice application of faux patina too. This will create a great image with a semi-cascade conifer.
Condition Unused, excellent.
The Izumi-Ya kiln is one of the oldest in Tokoname, the kiln of Matsushita Masuhisa (father) and Matsushita Masuo (son). The kiln is also known by the nickname Zenigo, their pots have a reputation for quality and often have a good patina due to so many having been around for quite a while now. Styles are often distinctly Asian, and robust in details, with thicker bands and fatter studs for example.
