Informal information:
A simple pot with age and charm. An irregular oval, white glaze that has crackled, and a patina that has imbued this pot with a great sense of age and care.
At first I thought it was a layered glaze because of the white band at the bottom, but now I'm quite sure that this pot lived in a tray for a very long time, and hence the patina never developed below the gravel line of the tray.
Don't underestimate white pots, especially ones with patina. They make very good companions to almost all trees, conveying a sense of age and wabi-sabi, allowing the tree to be enjoyed without distraction.
Condition: Used, patina, excellent.
Tojaku / Toujaku, real name Tadashi Hayashi, born 1935 in Kyoto, settled in Osaka. He travelled and had many careers including sailor, rice milling, transportation and furniture making. His older brother Yoshiaki was in the bonsai business so Tojaku changed to that too.
By 1960 he was teaching himself to make pots, and by 1971 bonsai pots were his primary occupation. He was a pioneer in small bowls and a significant influence on artists in the area around Kyoto, as well as being the teacher of Wajaku and Matuei Kimiko.
