Formal description:

Hand made Japanese bonsai pot by Shungo Hanasaki. Oval drum, straight sided with contrasting nail studs, cut feet, seal and signature of Hanasaki underneath.

External dimensions:
144 x 112 x 42mm (5⅝ x 4⅜ x 1⅝ in)

Internal dimensions:
125 x 100 x 35mm (4⅞ x 4 x 1⅜ in)

Informal information:

Something different from a rarely seen artist. Slab built from an iron bearing clay, the contrasting studs are a bold choice, but their colour has been muted by patina over time. The more time you spend with it the less unusual it seems - on a traditional Taiko drum the studs would contrast with the drum skin!

Use as you would any other drum, perhaps the different look makes it useful for trees other than the typical conifers.

Condition: Used, excellent.

Hokido, of Tokoname, real name Naoyuki Maenami, born in 1942, and started the Hokido kiln in 1976. The kiln was only active for 15 years before closing and although productive, many pots are hard to get hold of.
When his pots first came out, they caused a stir - people were impressed by the burnished finish of his red clay, as well as the dark shading that mimicked ancient patina - the pots had the look of valuable Chinese antiques. Nowadays many pots have real patina too, adding to the look.

Condition: Used, patina, good, a couple of tiny chips to the top of the rim, please see photos.
