Mazan / Shinzan Terahata (Seto) - White Crackle Rectangle - 9¾ (25cm)
Formal description:
Informal information:
A rectangle by Mazan, aka Shinzan Terahata, solid construction, external rim, with a fantastic finely crackled glaze. This looks like Ki-Seto glaze which is a very famous glaze from Seto, ash based, traditional and hard to master. The honeyed tone comes from the kind of ash used.
Immediately as the pot comes out of the kiln warm, the glaze is already cracking. It gets dipped or wiped with a black ink or tea, which seeps into the cracks, producing the black crackle. Later, a finer secondary crackle develops, which gives the golden crackle. This effect was called by the Chinese, "Iron wire and golden thread", and was symbolic of the pairing of military power with scholarly thinking that together maintain civil society.
Condition: Used, chip of glaze to rim missing, patina. This pot should be protected from freezing conditions.
Mazan, Mr. Shinzan Terahata, born 1945, he established his kiln in Seto. His early pots were mould made, but around 1985 he bored of this and started making all hand made pots. His clay is a unique blend of Seto, Tokoname and Chinese clays, which is high-fired. Many glazes are ash based - Seto has a long tradition of pottery and a number of famous glazes.
