Formal description:
Japanese bonsai pot by Keisen Sugiura. Round, external rim, belied base, signature of Keisen underneath.
External dimensions:
320 x 115mm (12⅝ x 4½ in)
Internal dimensions:
275 x 105mm (10¾ x 4 in)
Informal information:
I would describe this pot as a deep nanban - well made, practical and characterful - suitable for many trees that need the depth. That could include azalea, ume, or more typical nanban subjects. It has a good rustic feel and the rim adds some wonky refinement that adds a wabi-sabi sense.
A great pot with that unique angle of being an unusual piece from Keisen.
Condition: Possibly unused, excellent.
Sugiura Keisen, born 1935, he made bonsai with his father and they made pots for their own trees as part of their hobby, and his early works are signed "Sanshu Mukoyama". After encountering the work of the famous Sanshu Ichiyo he started his own kiln and signed works with this seal, "Keisen" and learnt from Ichiyo. You can find unglazed and glazed works, and if lucky, mame painted works.
