Formal description:
Informal information:
Detail from a "Bedroom Scene" or "Pillow Book". Juetsu has framed an intimate detail from an erotic print by an artist such as Okumura Masanobu so that we know exactly what is happening without showing anything graphic.
Mould made porcelain with a celadon glaze fired in reduction, and then an on-glaze / overglaze painting has been applied and scratched into for further detail. The technique echoes the carving of a woodcut and creates a lively and dynamic image that could be crass, but in fact is sensitively and creatively done. The paint colours in particular are lovely and bright, going beyond the usual go-sai palette and bring a 1980's feel to the work! A fun and humanistic piece, perhaps best paired with something flowering.
Juetsu, founded in 1927 by (Juho?) and Etsuji Kimata, the company name Ju-etsu came from a contraction of Juho and Etsuji. Kato Hisamine was the craftsman skilled in porcelain work, Etsuji worked on sales. From 1950 onwards, they produced suiban and were highly regarded in suiseki circles, they also produced shohin bonsai pots. I believe all works are made from porcelain, and possibly all moulded.
