Formal description:
Hand made shohin Japanese bonsai pot by Heian Kosen from Kyoto, round shape, pear skin clay, no rim, top and bottom bands of studs, cut feet, seal of Kosen underneath.
External dimensions:
125 x 50mm (5 x 2 in)
Internal dimensions:
107 x 33mm (4¼ x 1⅜ in)
Informal information:
A pear skin clay piece, either fired in a wood fired anagama kiln or having an ash based glaze that creates the shine on the surface.
Condition: Unused, excellent.
Heian Kosen, born 1933, inspired by Tofukuji he was making pots by 1955. He was a devotee of wood fired kilns, and always tried to fire in one, even as smoke regulations outlawed them in many areas. He was deeply inspired by Tofukuji, perfected his own version of the pear skin clay effect and made many excellent glazed works.
