Formal description:

Handmade Japanese bonsai pot by Haruyoshi. Internal rim, cut feet, white glaze over, seal of Haruyoshi underneath.

External dimensions:
142 x 106 x 34mm (5½ x 4⅛ x 1⅜ in)

Internal dimensions:
126 x 101 x 25mm (5 x 4 x 1 in)

Informal information:

I believe this is mould made, I've had a couple the same shape and size now. Thin, careful construction with excellent finishing make this a premium pot. The white glaze works well over the stoneware clay, picking up some variegation from the iron content.
It's all helped by some very nice patina that has started to develop along the bottom of the pot.

Condition: Used, patina, excellent.

Haruyoshi, real name Yoshiaki Azeyanagi, (unsure of birth date, still active).
Now famous for his painted pots, he is even more so in Japan, where there are stories of people queuing outside stores then dashing in and grabbing handfuls of pots!

There is good reason for this - his painted works are simply outstanding, top tier of his generation along with Gekkou, Yuzan and Kutani Ikko. If you get a chance to see his brushwork, you will notice a calligraphic style that relies on the lightest touch, and yet still energetic, never 'stiff'.

He was trained by Harumatsu the 3rd in making and glazing, and by Mizuno Shakao (Tosui) in painting, there is a sense that he is the continuation of both those lines of famous potters. He has a rooftop garden where he cares for bonsai, and a room up there with his gas kiln. He is active on Youtube with regular videos posted by his wife.

His shohin painted pots usually follow traditional landscape scenes, his mame pots can be more adventurous, often featuring real and imaginary creatures.

Unglazed and glazed shohin pots can be found at a similar price point to a good Koyo, mame painted pots from £400, shohin painted £1.5k+.
