Formal description:

Artisan bonsai pot from the Yamaaki Kiln. Shohin rectangle, external rim with lip, cut feet, early Akitsuga seal underneath.

External dimensions:
118 x 98 x 50mm (4¾ x 4 x 2 in)

Internal dimensions:
93 x 74 x 43mm (3⅝ x 3 x 1⅝ in)

Informal information:

An early production shohin pot from Yamaaki. This early seal is attributed to Akitsuga (1st Gen), but I've also seen it on pots signed Koshosen (2nd Gen), so it could be either, or even an assistant from that era, but at least 50 years old.  The clay colour is more brown than purple, and from my experience so far, that is more likely to be Koshosen rather than Akitsuga or Toshio.

Either way, this is a lovely little shohin pot, nicely made with a little detail, practical depth and a great patina developing.

A light application of oil, as seen in the first three pictures shows the character of the clay and patina well.

Condition: Used, excellent.

Yamaaki, Tokoname. The kiln was started by Kataoka Akitsuga and fired by three generations of potters, until it finally went 'cold' in 2011. It was the most productive bonsai pot kiln in Tokoname, fired with gas which gives those fantastic clay colours mimicking the pots of ancient China.
