Informal information:

What a collaboration! Daisuke Sano painted pots made by other artists, particularly Konno Shinzan, Isso and Bikoh; but he also used other potters works, and in this rare instance Kenji Mitsuyama. The pot is slab built, with a white crackle glaze that could almost be a colourless celadon, it has a milky translucence. Mitsuyama has also applied a pale orange Iron wash over this which accentuates the cracks and gives it a very aged appearance.

On top of this pot, Daisuke Sano has painted a simple but effective overglaze scene, in his unique graphic style. The blossom tree wraps around the corner, the spray of three blossoms and leaves on the front is particularly stylised. The bird, I'm assuming a hawk (from the tail) appears to be in free flight and is charmingly rendered. The painting is in excellent condition, with no visible wear.

Sometimes painted pots have a clear overglaze applied, other times not - as is the case here. I would advise not allowing this pot to freeze, I'd also suggest handling so as to not touch the painting to avoid any wear.

Condition: Possibly used, excellent.

Daisuke Sano, 1919-2000. He was director of the Shohin Bonsai Association, and was making pots from 1949. Well known for his bold, graphic style of painting, although many works show delicate brushstrokes, particularly his red paintings. Also made carved pots with overglazes & celadons. Pots were usually made by collaborators, particularly Konno Shinzan, and latterly a lot were made by Munakato Isso and Horie Bikoh. Many other collaborations exist, including painting bodies made by Tsukinowa Yusen. His works became incredibly popular in the mid 2000's, with a great many being bought in Taiwan. They're now very hard to find, and consequently, expensive!

Kenji Mitsuyama, born 1934, Ibaraki Pref. Received training at Fukuda pottery factory, and in 1974 learnt to make bonsai pots from Imaoka Machinao. Has exhibited works and won awards. Reknowned for the quality of his clay which is a blend of Shigaraki and Tamba earth, he constructed pots using the wheel and slab building. Famous for his glazes, of which there are over 200, and celebrated for his ability to make timeless looking pots; this elusive quality is one inherited from his tutor Machinao. Daisuke Sano has used his pots for painting. No longer making.
