Mazan, Mr. Shinzan Terahata, born 1945, he established his kiln in Seto. His early pots were mould made, but around 1985 he bored of this and started making all hand made pots. His clay is a unique blend of Seto, Tokoname and Chinese clays, which is high-fired. Many glazes are ash based - Seto has a long tradition of pottery and a number of famous glazes.
Seto is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan, pottery was made there from the 13th century onwards, probably as a result of it having excellent clay resources, gairome clay is still used for its high firing strength and plasticity today. Another feature of Seto was it's Pine trees, the ash of which is a fundamental component of traditional Seto glazes such as Ki-Seto and Oribe.
