Formal description:

Handmade rectangle by Sugiura Keisen, external rim, integrated feet, seal of Keisen underneath.

External dimensions:
87 x 64 x 35mm

Internal dimensions:
71 x 49 x 26mm

Informal information:

Wonderful, delicate rectangle by Keisen. The feet are perhaps 3mm in thickness. Keisen made shohin pots too, but is rightly popular for his mame work. The colour of the clay suggests it was reduction fired, I am guessing gas rather than wood given that Keisen started his kiln in 1960.

Condition is unused, very good, there are a couple of small 'holes' which I think are from grog falling out during the making process. I'm not sure why but the previous collector has put a spot of red paint on the underneath. I could try and remove it but perhaps it's part of the history now.

Sugiura Keisen, born 1935, he made bonsai with his father and they made pots for their own trees as part of their hobby, and his early works are signed "Sanshu Mukoyama". After encountering the work of the famous Sanshu Ichiyo he started his own kiln and signed works with this seal, "Keisen" and learnt from masters of his time. You can find unglazed and glazed works, and if lucky, mame painted works.
