Informal information:

Presumed to be mould made and hand finished, this pot features hand carved designs by Togens younger brother Mr. Yoshimasa, who goes by the name 'Togai'. All Togen pots are carved by Togai, whose work is remarkably fine and detailed.
The pot is intended for a Pine tree. The carvings are of Ume (Plum) and Bamboo, which together with Pine are called by the Chinese the "Three Friends of Winter" as they don't wither even in deep Winter. This motif is ancient, appearing in the Tang dynasty, 9th Century, representing steadfastness, persevenrance and resilience, and has appeared in art, poetry and writing ever since.

Condition: Used, patina, very good.

Togen, (real name Hisashi Tsuzuki, born 1939), sometimes called Tougen. Mr. Hisashi is a second generation potter who trained under Taizan for 12 years from 1954 and then worked for his father. In 1971 his father died and he inherited the family business, making a wide range of ceramics. He started bonsai pots in the bonsai boom of the 1980s. His clay is 100% Tokoname, carefully filtered, leading to a very fine grained clay, with no additives. Works have been fired in anagama, gas and electric kilns.
