External dimensions:

Internal dimensions:

Informal information:

This fine piece was made 49 years ago when Kenzan first opened his kiln to commemorate the Japan Bonsai Sakufu Exhibition -  and also bears his rarer long seal which reads "Made by Kenzan of Mino Province".

Craftsmanship is excellent as always and condition is perfect which isn't always the case. The surface comes from being reduction fired, but also from Kenzans composition of Mino clays, this combination creates a scenery of mottled dark and light patches. The surface is also very smooth and tactile.

This pot has been very well cared for in its lifetime, there are watermarks underneath but not on the top or sides.

Condition: Used, patina, excellent.

Mino Kenzan, from Tajima, Gifu Prefecture, born in 1943, started pottery in 1958 and was independently making bonsai pots by 1975. I had heard he used a wood fired climbing kiln which is traditional but rare in Japan now, I believe he may also have done some work with electric reduction. His clay is from Mino, which is both a city and historically a province of Japan, now encompassed in Southern Gifu, along with Tajima where Kenzan is from.
