Informal Information:

I'm pleased to be able to offer another master work by reknowned craftsman Kamiya Ryuen. The corner cut shape is bold and masculine, as well as having twice as many corners to carve! Despite being a masculine pot, ideally suited to a Japanese Black Pine, notice the fine, delicate rail at the bottom, above the feet; and how the feet are stepped below that with a further, equally sized rail. Exquisitve carving skills.

Another interesting point is that this pot has a 'Cold' and a 'hot' side - one side is purplish, the other is a warmer a tone. On the short sides, you can see the transition. I'm guessing the purplish side was facing the kiln wall where it was hotter.

This pot has been used, although lightly perhaps as there's only a small amount of water marking underneath, and no particular patina.

Condition:  One extremely small chip to the edge of one foot, please see photos. Not big enough to be of any consequence, but it's there.

Kamiya Ryuen, born 1929, died approximately 2008. Son of a temple carpenter. He began making pots in 1972, and settled on the technique of carving from a solid block as his preferred method of construction due to frustration with the integrity of slab built work. Feet are still usually attached in the normal manner.

His work is very collectible, they're regarded as master works, in part because of his integrity - almost all of his pots were made using this time consuming technique which limited production; but also because his work is incredibly exacting - all sides and angles are precise, details are fine, there's no deformation. He produced many shapes, and many, many feet designs. He also painted pots, and collaborated with Gekkou on painted works. They are also very practical. Price wise, only Wajaku is on a par for carved unglazed pots.

As with all fine artists, there is a scale of pricing that is quite consistent. The value of Ryuens works are determined by scarcity of the shape and feet, complexity of details, size, whether it's painted and the chop or signature combination.

There are still pages detailing his methods, which a simple search will bring up.
