Formal description:
Japanese bonsai pot by Aiba Kouyou / Koyou / Koyo of Tokoname, rectangle, internal rim, cut feet, blue 'Kinyo' glaze, seal of Koyo underneath.
External dimensions:
300 x 230 x 100mm (12 x 9 x 4 in)
Internal dimensions:
267x 196 x 83mm ( 10½ x 7¾ x 3¼ in)
Informal information:
The glaze is a classic 'Kinyo' blue, the blue speckling varies over the surface. The height makes it very practical - for example with any of the prunus family, think a semi-cascade Ume, Sloe, Mahaleb or St Lucie Cherry. All will look stunning with the blue glaze when in flower.
The pot has a black slip on the unglazed surfaces, an effect used in the early days of the Koyo kiln. This pot is probably from around the 1980's, 30-50 years old.
Condition: Unused, excellent.
Koyo, Mr. Aiba Kouichirou, born 1944, from a familiy of potters. He founded the Koyo kiln in the 1970's, his work always very popular. Perhaps his most famous glaze is the green crystal oribe, which changed over time and really gained it's own identity apart from the famous ones of Tofukuji and Ino Shukuho. His pots are reliable as well as great to look at.
