Formal description:

Handmade Japanese bonsai pot by Bizan. Rectangle with internal rim, cut feet, sometsuke painted landscape and geometric design, recessed base, seal of Bizan underneath.

External dimensions:
135 x 104 x 35mm (5⅜ x 4⅛ x 1⅜ in)

Internal dimensions:
120 x 90 x 25mm (4¾ x 3½ x 1 in)

Informal information:

A finely painted landscape from Bizan. The laconic scene has more visual weight to the right, and the line of birds echoes the angle of the hillside.
This visual weight implies direction, but it's important not to get hung up about this. Many exhibition trees lean in the opposite direction that the pot suggests, and many times an upright tree will simply have a branch or two that echo the direction in the painting.

Bizans use of the geometric design has two effects - it suggests traditional woven crafts, but more importantly it creates a dense background so that the landscape 'pops' out and gets attention.

Condition: Used, sesame seed sized chip to foot (see pic), otherwise excellent.

Bizan, real name Toshinori Matsuzaka, born 1923 in Osaka Prefecture. Started making pottery as an extension to his bonsai hobby, he worked as a police officer. After retiring, he made pots in earnest. He was a member of the Japan Famous Bowl Preservation Association (Who wouldn't want to see their collections!). His style is unique and easily identified, combining painted scenes and geometric designs, techniques include Aka-e (red) painting, Sometsuke and inlaid clay work. A popular artist.
