24284: Kamuikotan (Chlorite) Suiseki - 13⅝ in (35cm)

A large stone evoking distant hills rather than a dramatic mountain, it has a quiet nature and is an easy one to feel a landscape connection with, some of the lighter veins suggest streams. It has substantial mass and would be valuable as part of a three point display where you don't want the stone to draw attention from a tree, but rather to add presence.

The surface has been treated to darken it as is very common with certain Kamuikotan stones, but the underneath appears untouched by tools, and has value as a found stone, not a cut one. It has a definite front as there is a broken edge on the rear (presumably from before being collected).

The daiza has been handmade from wood for this stone, it fits very well and accomodates the bumps underneath well. It also has attractive decorative carving underneath, clearly a cherished item.

The stone works particularly well in a suiban as shown, which is only 15mm deep. Suiban not included.

Source: Kamuikotan, Ishikari River, Hokkaido. Sold as Maguro stone of the Kamuikotan, it appears to more accurately be Kamuikotan Chlorite from comparisons with other stones. 

Kamuikotan stones are one of the main Suiseki stones, and very variable in their qualities, with many identified sub-types.
