Informal Information:
A superb larger pot from the Yamaaki kiln of Tokoname, solidly built, very powerful, 'masculine' form. This form originates in ancient Chinese pots, and the design has been used by many potters through the ages, Gyouzans is similar, Syuzan softens the basal band for a different look. To my Western eye it evokes the art deco era and designs from Egypt, but in a Japanese context, it reminds me of Torii - the large gates, often red in colour, placed at the entrance of shrines to denote a sacred space. It would perfectly suit a larger tree with robust, craggy bark.
It is made from the purple Shudei clay of Tokoname, a little patina, I would guess this pot is from the 1980's or '90s, making it 30-40 years old.
Condition: Used, a little patina, excellent
Yamaaki, 3rd Generation Potter Kataoaka Toshio. The kiln was started by Katakoka Akitsuga and fired by three generations of potters, until it finally went 'cold' in 2011. It was the most productive bonsai pot kiln in Tokoname, fired with gas which gives those fantastic clay colours mimicking the pots of ancient China. Toshio does seem to prefer a purplish hue much like Akitsuga. There are a lot of production Yamaaki pots available, those with nail carved signatures were hand made by the Kataoka family, and consequently more valuable.
