Formal description:
Hand made Japanese bonsai pot by Tani Ranzan / Arashiyama, rectangle with framed paintings, cut corners with basket pattern on carved feet, seal of Tani Ranzan / Arashiyama underneath.
External dimensions:
84 x 63 x 37mm
Internal dimensions:
72 x 50x 28mm
Informal information:
An early painted piece from Tani Arashiyama. The clay is porcelaneous, the pinkish colour looks like it's been brushed on and flashed by volatile elements in the kiln.
The paintings are scenes of relaxation and reflection - resting on a shoreline, watching the moon. I haven't been able to translate the kanji on the side.
This is likely an early piece, unique and inimitable Tani Arashiyama and would be perfect for a mame tree or accent.
Condition: Possibly unused, excellent.
Tani Ranzan / Tani Arashiyama, real name Hiroyuki Tani, born 1940. His main job was at his sushi restaurant, but he developed a passion for bonsai and hence pottery. He established a kiln with six friends including his wife, and by 1960 was winning awards for his pots. He devoted himself to pots more fully after closing his sushi restaurant. You can find glazed, painted and carved works which are diverse but have a very strong 'Tani' identity. I believe he is still active today.
