Formal description:
Japanese bonsai pot from Koshosen of the Yamaaki kiln. Rectangle with external rim with lip, incised upper band, deep lower band, integrated feet with Yamaaki Akitsuga seal and Koshosen seal.
External dimensions:
380 x 292 x 113mm (15 x 11½ x 4½ in)
Internal dimensions:
329 x 240 x 88mm (13 x 9½ x 3⅜ in)
Informal information:
A very fine rectangle by Koshosen. The design is a fairly common one from Yamaaki, produced in a number of sizes, and is based on ancient Chinese designs. I always think it looks like 1920's Art-Deco style, but the '20s probably borrowed it from Chinese and Japanese designs, and in point of fact, it is more reminiscent of a Torii gate.Typical Koshosen clay colour, hand finishing on the details, there has been a chip and repair on the rim, but the repair looks good, and it doesn't stand out. Price reduced to take this into account. Great pot.
Condition: used, small repaired chip to rim (see pics), very good.
Koshosen, real name Sadamitsu Kataoka, also took the name Matsuizumi after his father passed away. The Yamaaki kiln was the most productive bonsai pot factory in Tokoname, thanks to Shosen Seniors modernisation. They fired a large gas kiln, producing very popular pots that captured the spirit of ancient Chinese pots. Only pots with nail signatures were handmade.
Koshosen's pots are perhaps the most collectible of the Yamaaki kilns works. They are less in number, the clay is different and a different colour, and details if not the whole pot are hand made in nature.
