Informal information:
Sometimes it's hard to list a pot, but great pots need to be used! Here's an old, old Sanshu Ichiyo piece. He was a master of this 'white' glaze which is much in the vein of the ancient Chinese kokotoe white glaze. The shape and glaze application have created a 'scene' - suggestive of snow, mountains and things obscured. It is a masterpiece. The proportions are similar to old Chinese rectangles - an offset planting is recommended, this pot would suit both deciduous and conifer trees.
Important Notes. Do not expose to frost. My humble apologies if the following sounds patronising. This isn't just a pot. It's an important part of bonsai history - a buyer is taking on the responsibility of looking after it and passing it down to future generations. There simply aren't many of these pots in the world. I will always buy this pot back.
Condition: Please examine the photo's, there are various chips that have accumulated over time as well as glaze pits. There's no significant or structural damage. This pot has a 2-3mm wobble and would benefit from support under a foot.
Sanshu Ichiyo, 1902-1985, started as a pottery seller, an expert in Chinese wares, which clearly inspired his work. Self taught as a potter, although he did receive instruction from various masters at the time. He was making by 1932, but after WWII, he worked in precision machinery, until a return to pottery in 1970. So there are two eras of his work.
Recognised for bringing appreciation and respect of Japanese bon ware to the people, he was a strong advocate for moving from Chinese pots to Japanese ones. He was also a pottery teacher; perhaps he would reject that title, he called his apprentices 'comrades'; they included significant figures in Bonsai pottery such as Ito Gekkou, his brother Ito Tonyo, Shiko, Tankyou, and Sugiura Keisen. There is a sense of a generous and humble person, I think that comes across in the work. A highly regarded master potter.
