Formal description:

Handmade and painted Japanese bonsai pot by Kyogoku Shiho. Rectangle with external rim, lower band, cut feet, Soba glaze with paintings of Ume flowers over. Carved seal and signature  of Kyogoku Shiho underneath.

External dimensions:
106 x 80 x 38mm (4⅛ x 3⅛ x 1½ in)

Internal dimensions:
91 x 64 x 32mm (3½ x 2½ x 1⅜ in)

Informal information:

A unique painted rectangle by Kyogoku Shiho that also feels like a classic. Ume on a pot is always associated with Winter and Spring around the corner. The soba glaze has crawled a little bit (bare patches), but the artist has still come back and painted this pot, a sure sign that it wasn't of serious consequence. Also worth noting is that one front has flowers on the left, the other on the right, to suit a tree leaning in either direction.
Ideal for a flowering tree like Ume, Blackthorn or other Prunus shown in it's Winter image, or just enjoyed in a collection.
Condition: Used, patina, excellent.

Kyogoku Shiho - Real name Toyoki Shinomaru, born 1961, making pottery since he was 30 years old. Has studied masters such as Yusen, Isseki, Ogurayama and Hikosanjin. He copied a Yusen pot as part of a publishing project, and gained a big reputation off the back of that work because it was so close to the original. His painting style is often in a vivid go-sai palette, has also produced relief work.
