Informal information:

A wild, hade cascade pot from Zeshin, except it's actually a lot more practical than some of his other creations!

This is large by his usual standard, and heavy too. I expect this was intended as a counterweight to a cascade design of tree, so it's been made to be used.

Zeshins pots often combine carving and glazes, here there are four unique demon heads with a studded lower band, and the main action is in the layering of the glazes. The base glaze is a heavy iron crystalline aventurine / persimmon glaze. On top of that is a runny ash based glaze. Balancing these two so that they were just dripping over the demon heads will have been a serious technical challenge, and each side is different.

The overall image suggests spontaneity and humour (I love the demon with the glaze dripping over both eyes!), but the skills and imagination on display are superb.

Condition: Unused, excellent.

Okaya Zeshin, real name Futoshio Okaya, died in 1997. An instrumental founding member of the Yokohama Ippingai - a guild of small pot artists. His works are typically very small Mame to Shohin size, combining finely carved details with numerous colourful glazes. The effect is jewel-like. He was a very significant artist who inspired many small pot artists, his carved work built on that of artists such as Chazan and Seifu Yohei.

The price of his pots can be breath-taking at first - they have to be viewed as artworks that defined a new era, the size of their influence is many times greater than their physical size.
