Informal information:

Practical and with years of use, this Imaoka pot is a small gem. The porcelain clay expresses the best qualities of the celadon glaze, which itself has a lot of subtle variation. I feel like there were pots with copper based glazes in the kiln at the same time, because there are small flushes of pink in places.

Imaokas pots are varied and collectible, there are many twists on celadon glazes, this simple and understated one is very usable and would suit many deciduous trees.

Condition: Used, patina, excellent.

Imaoka Machinao, born 1925 in Tokyo. Worked as a teacher, in 1964 he opened a kiln. He taught pottery and even produced a book and mini-kiln kit, many amateur potters started this way. He was also a prodigious bonsai-ist, and grew many species of tree.

He worked with many traditional glazes, and popularised crawl glazes, these pots can be hard to acquire! His pots can seem innocuous, but when I see one I ask myself, "What's the lesson here?" and find a new appreciation for the work.
