Formal description:

Hand made suiban from Harumatsu of Japan. Oval with external rim, cut feet, white glaze externally, blue painterly glaze inside, seal and nail signature of Harumatsu inside.

External dimensions:
575 x 411 x 43mm (22⅝ x 16¼ x 1⅝ in)

Internal dimensions:
550 x 388 x 23mm (21⅝ x 15¼ x ⅞ in)

SKU: 24953

Informal information:

From the outside, a seemingly typical white kochi suiban. But the inside is anything but ordinary - a blue glaze has been added and intermixed with the white to create a scene of an island archipelago in a vast ocean.

Practically, this suiban could be used for large stones with sand as is common in Suiseki. However, it would truly come into it's own if used under a large rock planting, emphasising the idea of a small rocky island.

Condition: Used, some fine scratches to the inside, otherwise excellent.

Harumatsu, Seto region, the Harumatsu name covers three generations of potters, and they're intertwined with the Tosui line of potters. The Harumatsu potters are most famed for their Suiban, Harumatsu Rokumisai hand made unique pieces and was a master craftsman. He also taught Haruyoshi, who is sometimes considered to be part of the Harumatsu line. Harumatsu bonsai pots can vary greatly in price, there are some very basic production pots, good artisan production pots and then hand made works. I will always try to point out specifics on each pot for this sometimes confusing line of potters!
