Informal information:

Shunka Seizan isn't in the old pottery books, he only started making in 2006, but his hand carved pots have garnered a lot of attention and it's easy to see why. Michael Ryan Bell has written 3 articles over at www.japanesebonsaipots.net and they're worth checking out.

This example has clear hallmarks of the hand carving process, from the inside lines that grade downwards to the drain holes to the slight variation in the feet. The pot rim has sagged slightly in the firing which is a risk with porcelain, but it just adds character.

The glazing is thick and complex, applied all the way down the feet and underneath which gives it a high quality feel - there are flecks of blue and where the white glaze pools it becomes almost luminous. The crackle has been stained a golden colour but only on the lower half. It's a pot that rewards with more interest the more you look at it, rather special.

Condition: Possibly unused, excellent.

Shunka Seizan, aka Suruga Masayama, real name Kawamura Seishun. Started pottery in 2006 but a veteran of bonsai for over 50 years. Works are all hand carved with more a sense of spontaneity than perfection. Glazes are often multilayered or 'tweaked' for further interest, also produces painted pots with varied glazes.
