Informal information:

A beguiling little pot full of detail. The shape suggests a semi-cascade or very fat, squat tree. The body is porcelain with a very pale celadon glaze over.

The painting is surprisingly pale - I believe this has been caused by the interaction of the sometsuke paint and the semi-transparent celadon overglaze. The blue ink is as strong as normal, but celadon has a very fine matrix of bubbles that when used as an overglaze has partially clouded the painting.

Perhaps it's an early work or was experimental, perhaps even intentional. But never mind! It creates a soft and charming view that is quite unique.

The paintings themselves are highly detailed and accomplished - in the boat scene there is a tiny sailor, and in the mountain landscape there is a wise man, his assistant and a mountain hermitage.
Keishin is noted for his paintings of people and animals, and here his entertaining world view does not disappoint; with a river crossing involving two people on a rather sad looking cows back.

Overall, a wonderful piece displaying wit, charm, delicacy and age.

Condition: Used, patina, excellent.
