Formal description:
Japanese bonsai pot by Yoshimura (Shuuho / Shuho). Rectangle, external rim, lower band, incised corners, cut feet, seal of Yoshimura Shuho kiln and nail signature underneath.
External dimensions:
420 x 286 x 67mm (16½ x 11¼ x 2⅝ in)
Internal dimensions:
388 x 253 x 53mm (15¼ x 10 x 2⅛)
Informal information:
Shuho's crystal oribe glaze with plenty of interest, from the dep blue streaks to the overlying crystals, it has a lot of depth and also accentuates the incised corners nicely. It's another masculine shape with some softness, the long low feet also go well with the corners, the overall image is sleek and would suit a more slender tree.
The patina could be removed to 'brighten' the pot up, but with a little oil it gains a mellowed look.
Condition - used, excellent, patina.
Shuuho is a prolific 5th generation potter, carrying on his fathers kiln that opened in 1923. Much loved and revered in Japan, he continues to innovate, especially with glazes. There are some great video interviews on the Bonsai Empire and BonsaiQ channels to check out this living legend of a potter.
