Formal description:

Japanese bonsai pot by Reihou of Tokoname. Rectangle, internal rim, incised corners, stepped feet, blue / buff matte crystal glaze and seal of Reiho underneath.

External dimensions:
278 x 190 x 50mm (11 x 7½ x 2 in)

Internal dimensions:
252 x 165 x 37mm (10 x 6½ x 1⅜ in)

Informal information:

An unusual, early pot from Reihou. The shape is strong and the glaze unique, being a matte crystal, and because it's on a very nice iron rich clay, that iron creates a patina-like effect along the top edge and corners, muting the colour. Clearly well used and loved, with an imaginative choice of tree this could create a very special image.

Condition: Used, excellent.

Reihou Kataoka Katsushi, son of Kataoka Makoto who founded the famous Tokoname kiln Seizan in 1889. The kiln is run by Reihou now. His father pursued unglazed work and created some inspired pieces, Reihou is more modern, his glazed work is ambitious but usuallyt seems to maintain a little reserve, allowing the tree to take centre stage.
