Formal description:
Handmade Japanese bonsai pot by Morigaki Yukata. Round no rim, cut feet, Sometsuke painted bamboo design, signature of Yukata underneath.
External dimensions:
92 x 72mm
Internal dimensions:
80 x 50mm
Informal information:
A very attractively painted Izushi ware bonsai pot. The clay is a local porcelain, and the painting is in Sometsuke, very much in the Izushi style, and Morigaki Yukata is perhaps a figurehead for Izushi ware. So, whilst not a famous bonsai potter, I think the pot carries a lot of the spirit of Izushi ware, of a place and unique style.
Condition: Used, excellent.
Morigaki Yutaka, born in Izushi, Hyogo Prefecture in 1918 , potting from 15 years old, built Toyoizumi kiln in Izushi town in 1981 to "make what he wants" after a lifetime of pot making. Demonstrated in front of the Emperor and Empress in 1994, Izushi ware (Izushi yaki) is porcelain fired in the Izushi town area of Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is also called Izushi white porcelain. He can be said to embody the spirit of Izushi ware, and is deeply passionate about it. The Izushi style is relaxed, with strong designs painted with layered brushstrokes. It's very much a unique style, and bonsai pots are rare.
