Formal description:
Hand made and painted Japanese bonsai pot by Ito Gekko. Rectangle with slight internal and external rim, cut feet, Aka-e and sometsuke paintings to all sides and top, painted signature of Ito Gekkou.
External dimensions:
166 x 134 x 49mm (6½ x 5¼ x 2 in)
Internal dimensions:
142 x 108 x 38mm (5⅝ x 4¼ x 1½ in)
Informal information:
A larger Gekko pot, with four very intricately painted depictions of dragons, or possibly one dragon in different situations! Each dragon has their own unique characterisation and in typical good fashion, dragons on opposite sides face in opposite directions, so that the pot can match the direction of the tree planted in it.
The red 'Aka-e' painting surrounding the dragon cartouches is equally detailed, and the textural effect of the dots is also used on the dragons, helping to unify the compositions. Comes with signed box and cloth.
Condition: Unused, excellent.
Ito Gekko - Ito Yasutoshi, born 1939, fourth generation of the Tankyogama family. Studied at Aichi Ceramics School, and learnt painting from Kato Shunichi, and was encouraged by Sanshu Ichiyo. He began making Sometsuke (Blue and white) porcelain bowls around 1969 and won the Keisei award at the Famous Bowl Exhibition in that year. Has won many awards since that time. His early pots were often made by his brother Ito Tonyo, but for a long time now he has made his own pots, mostly by carving from a block. You can find Aka-e (red), Sometsuke and Go-sai (five colour) painted pots, his style was originally heavily inspired by Tsukinowa Yusen but it can definitely now be said that he exhibits his own unique style, and is one of the most admired painters of pots in the history of Japanese bonsai ceramics.
